Colombia’s Daniel Elahi Galan admitted that it is definitely one of the best moments of his career after he caused the biggest upset of the US Open 2022 after beating World No. 5 Stefanos Tsitsipas. The Colombian won by 6-0, 6-1, 3-6, 7-5 at the Flushing Meadows to confirm his second-round berth.
It was a dominating performance from the 26-year-old as he bageled the Greek in the first set, breaking him thrice. Daniel continued his domination in the second set as he won it after losing only one game. Daniel finished the game in two hours and 48 minutes as he brought his best to the court.
“Definitely one of the best moments of my career,” Galan said. “Definitely the best match of my career, not only because of the circumstances, also the opponent. I’m really happy.”
However, Tsitsipas made some kind of a recovery as he won the third set by 6-3 but lost the fourth set by 7-5.
“I think he started playing better in the third set. He served much better than the first two and I was putting the serve in the court, but not putting pressure on him. He was always in control,” Galan said. “I think he felt really comfortable during those two sets. I tried to change a little bit the position when I was returning and that was a change a lot because I was able to return [deeper] and he was not so offensive on the first ball, so I was able to do a little bit more.”
On the other hand, the number four seed admitted that he didn’t play his best and it didn’t go as planned for him.
“I was very motivated and pumped before the US Open started because I knew I could use this tournament to get closer to the number one spot,” Tsitsipas said after the loss. “It just didn’t go as planned.”
“He dominated the match,” Tsitsipas admitted. “I just couldn’t get into it.”
Daniel Elahi Galan will next face Australia’s Jordan Thompson in the second round of the US Open.
