They are not going to beat him – Jimmy Connors on Carlos Alcaraz’s older rivals

Former eight-time Grand Slam champion Jimmy Connors has taken a dig at Carlos Alcaraz’s older rivals and feels they are not going to beat him if the Spaniard continues to play the way he does. Alcaraz is currently at the top of the Tennis world as he recently won his maiden Wimbledon title by beating a relentless Novak Djokovic in the summit clash at Centre Court.

It was a five-set thriller between the two competitors, who weren’t willing to give an inch to each other. Alcaraz knew he had to play aggressively against the Serbian and the Spaniard was able to stand tall to the challenge. The youngster ended Djokovic’s unbeaten streak of 46 matches at SW19 and became the first man to beat him at the Championship since 2017.

Meanwhile, Alcaraz has shown all the skills to go a long way in his career and he will look to keep going strong in the upcoming US Open.

Jimmy Connors said on his podcast, Advantage Connors, “Let’s say he plays until he’s 33. If he doesn’t get too full of himself, if he doesn’t think that he has to go out and work hard, if he doesn’t think it’s going to come easy and continues what he’s doing now, he has that passion and smile, I’d say he gets to 15. I’m not saying this cause the guys in front of him are a little older and not going to beat him.”

Connors, the former World No.1, added Carlos will inspire the young players to take up the sport and they are going to challenge him at the top level.

“There’ll be some young kids coming up now that will see him who are 17 or 18 who will believe that if he can do it, I can do it. He’s going to set the bench. It all depends on what comes behind him because he knows what’s in front of him. I don’t think he’s afraid of that.”

Alcaraz will now look to defend his US Open title.
