Renowned Scottish TV presenter and writer Gillian McKeith believes the other tennis players don’t want to see Novak Djokovic playing at US Open as they feel their chances of winning would diminish if the Serbian takes part in the New York Major.
Not many Tennis players have come in support for Novak Djokovic as his future at US Open hangs by a thin thread. According to current immigration US rules, anyone who is not vaccinated against Covid-19, cannot enter the country. As Djokovic hasn’t taken the jab against the virus, he will not be allowed to take part in the tournament.
“The most amazing thing about the #djokovic situation is the silence from the tennis world. It almost makes you think that the other tennis players don’t want him in the #USOpen2022 for example…Their chances of winning would diminish,” McKeith tweeted.
Meanwhile, Novak Djokovic won his 21st Grand Slam title after beating Nick Kyrgios in a four-set contest in the Wimbledon final. Djokovic had also made it to the final of the US Open in 2021 but he could cross the final hurdle against Daniil Medvedev.
Earlier in the year, Djokovic was deported from Australia as his visa was revoked by the authorities.
The Serbian has been in good form but could not take part in National Bank Open and the ongoing Cincinnati Masters due to his unvaccinated status. Earlier in the season, Djokovic could not play in Miami Open and Indian Wells due to the same reason.
On the other hand, World No.1 Daniil Medvedev wants Novak Djokovic to take part in the US Open as he wants the best players to be playing in the New York Major.
“I cannot do anything, it is the government who sets the rules, so I do not know if it can actually change or not,” Medvedev said, adding, “If you ask me, if I would be the decision-maker, sure I want Novak to play. I like it when the tournament [has] the best players in the world.”
US Open will begin on August 29.
