Swiss tennis star Belinda Bencic wants people to not write off Roger Federer as he is a man known for many comebacks. She feels that a comeback to the ATP Tour is possible for the Swiss legend.
Bencic recently spoke on the Match Point Canada Podcast and shared Federer’s chances of returning to the fore. The Olympic gold medallist is truly hopeful that 20 times Grand Slam winner will be able to return to the tour.
The 24-year-old wanted the fans to reminisce the comebacks that Federer have pulled off in the past and is hopeful that even at the age of 40 the Swiss legend can make one final comeback. Bencic feels that it is important for the tennis world that Federer returns to the court than choosing retirement.
Bencic is confident that even if Federer does not make a comeback, then also he will end up as the greatest of all time. Although he is equal in terms of Grand Slam count with Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic.
“People have written Roger Federer off so many times already but he always keeps coming back. He has proved so many times that he is one of the best three players in the world,” Bencic said. “I definitely hope he will get back healthy and play tennis tournaments again. I think the tennis world needs him to play. I definitely think he can be the best at any time.”
Federer last featured at Wimbledon last year where he lost out in the quarterfinals against Hubert Hurkacz. The Swiss legend has gone through multiple knee surgeries and is recovering from them. He has stated that his return date is not confirmed and the earliest he can return to court is at Wimbledon but even that looks tough as of now.
The youngster expressed her regret of not featuring in the Hopman. The last Hopman Cup happened in 2019 and Switzerland were the winners as Bencic paired up with Federer to win the trophy twice in a row.
Surprisingly Roger Federer has featured in the Hopman Cup after pairing up with his wife, Mirka back in 2002. He also paired up with Martina Hingis back in 2001.
