World number one Iga Swiatek overcame a fierce battle to defeat world number two Aryna Sabalenka 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (9-7), earning her first Madrid Open title. The match was an exciting contest that spanned over three hours, with both players delivering some of the best performances in their careers.
22-year-old Swiatek faced significant pressure throughout the final set, saving three championship points to eventually secure the victory. Despite being broken early in the third set, she maintained her composure and displayed resilience, particularly during the tie-break.
Sabalenka, who defeated Swiatek in last year’s Madrid Open final, seemed poised to repeat that success but was denied the opportunity by a better-prepared opponent. The players traded early service breaks, but neither were able to establish a clear advantage. As Swiatek began to make more unforced errors, she had to fend off three break points to level the set at 3-3.
After some intense exchanges, Swiatek took the first set 7-5 by forcing errors from Sabalenka. The second set saw Sabalenka rebounding strongly, breaking Swiatek’s serve early and holding a 2-0 lead. This started a sequence of four consecutive breaks, eventually resulting in the set being level at 3-3. Sabalenka maintained pressure on Swiatek, breaking her serve to win the second set and bring the match to a deciding third set.
In the final set, Sabalenka gained an early advantage, breaking Swiatek’s serve and taking a 3-1 lead. However, Swiatek fought back, serving twice to stay in the match and saving two championship points in the process. The match then went to a tie-break, with Sabalenka securing an ace to stay in contention. But ultimately, she could not hold off Swiatek, sending two long shots that handed Swiatek the championship.
The Madrid Open title is Swiatek’s 20th career title and comes after a gripping match between the world’s top two players. The victory also served as a form of redemption for Swiatek, as she has now made up for last year’s defeat.
