Stefanos Tsitsipas lauds Daniil Medvedev for his US Open win despite calling him one dimensional

Greek tennis star Stefanos Tsitsipas recently spoke about his Russian rival Daniil Medvedev and his playing style. The World No. 3 lauded Medvedev for his tendency to up his game at tough matches despite what according to him is a one dimensional game.

The Russian recently won his maiden Grand Slam after defeating Novak Djokovic in the US Open finals. In the process, he also ended Djokovic’s pursuit of achieving the Calendar Grand Slam.

In an interview with Antenna TV show “The Morning”, Tsitsipas admitted that Medvedev’s US Open win has taken him by surprise.

“He is very stable as a player. He is a very difficult opponent and it surprises me that with this kind of tennis he manages to win. It’s not boring, but it is one-dimensional,” Tsitsipas told SDNA. “He may be the best at the moment.”

The youngster admitted that he is one of the best players in the men’s game but he needs to improve on his performances at the big stages. However, he also added that with his training and dedication, his first Grand Slam is not very far away.

“I consider myself one of the best, but I have to prove it on the pitch. The differences are in detail,” he said. “This (first Major) will come with daily training and my own love for the sport.”

During the interview, he also spoke about how the pandemic has affected his life. The youngster revealed that he struggled to cope up with quarantine. He also said how it was tough for him to see the season getting cancelled as he had many goals to accomplish.

“We have to look at it with a good eye and deal with it,” Tsitsipas said. “At the beginning of the quarantine, I felt that my life had no meaning. I had so many goals to accomplish that season to show a new Stefanos and I knew the year was gone. I could not achieve what I set out to do.”

Tsitsipas’ US Open journey came to a rather disappointing end as he crashed out in the third round after losing to Spanish youngster Carlos Alcaraz Garfia. The Greek star will be eager to make a solid comeback in the upcoming tournaments.
