Aryna Sabalenka has overtaken Iga Swiatek as the WTA World No. 1. This marks the second time within 12 months that Sabalenka has risen to the top of the rankings after briefly holding the position for eight weeks last year following her success at the US Open.
The 26-year-old took to social media platform X to break the news with a simple post: “N1…. Let’s see for how long this time”.
Sabalenka’s recent success includes a remarkable 20-1 record since mid-August, highlighted by victories at the Cincinnati Open and Wuhan Open, along with her US Open title. In contrast, Swiatek faced point deductions for missing mandatory tournaments, which contributed to her drop from first to second place.
Currently, Sabalenka leads with 9,706 points, while Swiatek has 9,665 points. Both players will miss the upcoming Pan Pacific Open, which could lead to further point deductions for Swiatek.
Sabalenka’s ascent reflects her consistent performance, both on the court and her willingness to show up for events, taking advantage of Swiatek’s absence. Indeed, it’s been a fantastic year for the Belarusian as she added two grand slam titles to her bag in addition to two other WTA titles, and she has the opportunity to end the year on a high note at the WTA Finals next month, although Swiatek, last year’s winner, will try to regain her lost status in that tournament, so fans can expect to see a heightened level of competitiveness from the two women.
Although not a winner at the tournament herself, Sabalenka came close to winning the title in 2022 but lost the two-set game to Caroline Garcia. Given her incredible form this season and her string of successes, she will be entering the tournament as the clear favorite, and if things go her way till the end, she may be ending the year at the top of the rankings.
