Former British number one Greg Rusedski believes Novak Djokovic will be angry heading into Wimbledon as he is yet to win a slam in the 2022 season. Djokovic could not participate in the Australian Open due to his stance against vaccination and then he lost to his rival Rafael Nadal in the quarterfinal of the French Open in four sets.
Djokovic will now look to be at his best at SW19 and win his maiden slam title of the year. The Serbian had clinched his 20th Grand slam title when he won Wimbledon 2021 after beating Matteo Berrettini in the final.
Thus, Djokovic will be determined to defend his title at Wimbledon and he is going to face stiff competition from the likes of Hubert Hurkacz, Matteo Berrettini, and Rafael Nadal.
Djokovic had won in Rome but could not go all the way at Roland Garros and he will look to turn the tables on grass. Rusedski feels Rafael Nadal will look to go for a calendar slam. Nadal has confirmed his participation in Wimbledon.
Speaking in a recent interview, the 48-year-old Rusedski said, “The problem you have is, you have players who have the potential but winning is a totally different thing.
“Making the finals is one thing, but you have to have this mindset that’s absolutely insane these days because of the big three or four we’ve had over the generations.
“Djokovic is angry because he hasn’t won a slam this year and the way he went out to Rafa in the French Open will have hurt him. Rafa’s trying to go for the calendar slam. He wouldn’t be showing up if his foot wasn’t 100 percent and he was ready to go and Berrettini has been by far the best.
“Hurkacz is a guy who can go deep – semis or final – but win? Not with those three. Those three guys at the moment have separated themselves from the pack.”
Djokovic will be hungry to prove his mettle as Rafael Nadal now has two Grand slam titles more than him. The Serbian will aim to bring his best at Wimbledon 2022, which will begin on June 27 in London.
