Novak Djokovic beats Nick Kyrgios to win seventh Wimbledon title

Novak Djokovic continued his love affair with Wimbledon as he won his fourth consecutive title by beating Australia’s Nick Kyrgios by 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6(3) at Centre Court on Sunday. The Australian started the match in an aggressive manner as the Serbian had no answers to his opponent’s potent serve.

Nick took the first set convincingly by 6-4 but Djokovic bounced back stronger in the second set as he broke Kyrgios’ serve for the first time in his career. Djokovic was relentless and once again Kyrgios’ temperament led to his team.

The Australian kept shouting at his own team after getting frustrated. On the other hand, Novak Djokovic was cool and composed and won his 21st Grand slam title to move closer to Rafael Nadal’s tally of 22 majors.

“I have lost words for what this tournament, this trophy means to me, my team, my family,” said Djokovic at the trophy presentation. “I’ve said this many times. It always has been and always will be the most special tournament in my heart, the one that motivated me, inspired me to start playing tennis in a small mountain resort in Serbia where my parents used to run a restaurant.

Djokovic revealed that he had a dream of playing Wimbledon as a young child and he is relishing his successful journey.

“I was four or five years old and I saw Pete Sampras win his first Wimbledon in 1993. I asked my Dad and Mum to buy me a racquet, and my first image of tennis was grass and Wimbledon. I always dreamed of coming here, just playing in this court, and then realising the childhood dream of winning this trophy. Every single time it gets more meaningful and more special, so I’m very blessed and very thankful to be standing here with the trophy.”

On the other hand, Nick Kyrgios was full of praise for Novak Djokovic and said he is a bit of a God. The Australian feels he played well but still he wasn’t able to match Djokovic.

“He’s a bit of a god, I’m not gonna lie,” said Kyrgios when asked about Djokovic at the trophy presentation. “I thought I played well… It’s been an amazing couple of weeks for me personally. “Myself, my team, I think we are all exhausted, we’ve played so much tennis. I definitely need a well-earned vacation after this one. I’m just really happy with this result, it’s probably the best of my career. Maybe one day I’ll be here again.”

Djokovic is doubtful for the US Open as he cannot enter America due to his unvaccinated status. It will be interesting to note if he could participate in New York if the rules are relaxed by the authorities.
