Italian young Tennis sensation Lorenzo Musetti believes Novak Djokovic absolutely deserved to win the Calendar Grand slam. However, the pressure got to Djokovic in the US Open final as he lost in straight sets against Russia’s Daniil Medvedev.
Djokovic had claimed that he was going to give his all in the US Open final before the big game and he will play it like it is the last match of his career. But, the Serbian could not bring his top game to the table and he was dominated by the World no. 2.
Djokovic had a stellar run in 2021 as he showed his class on hard courts in the Australian Open, clay at the Roland Garros, and grass at the Wimbledon. But he could not conquer the final frontier.
The Serbian almost looked invincible in the season and won 27 matches on the trot in the four slams of the year.
Musetti feels Djokovic was tensed in the US Open final and he was not at his usual best.
“I thought he was immortal and instead even the greatest champions are crushed by the pressure. I didn’t see the whole match, I admit I slept,” Musetti told the Italian press.
“But I saw him very very tense. I was sorry because I cheered for him, he absolutely deserved to complete the Grand Slam, even though Medvedev played an extraordinary tournament. Nole is a very special person. Very nice, I think he really deserved to complete the Calendar Grand Slam.” he added.
The 19-year old has trained with Djokovic and added that his attention to detail is really impressive, which makes him one of the best players of the current generation.
“We talked but not about our game, training with him is always a privilege because you can see his way of working up close. His attention to detail is impressive.”
