My expectations are going to be higher – Jannik Sinner after winning maiden Masters 1000 title

Jannik Sinner admitted that the expectations from him are going to be higher after he won his maiden Masters 1000 title. The Italian defeated Australia’s Alex de Minaur in straight sets by 6-4, 6-1 in the summit clash of the Canadian Open.

Earlier, Sinner had made it to the final of the Miami Open 2023 but could not cross the last hurdle against Carlos Alcaraz. The 21-year-old youngster was delighted after his win and said he will look to continue the good show in the upcoming tournaments.

Sinner told reporters, “It feels so good. It is a great result, one I can share with all the people who are close to me.

“We are doing the right things and working very hard. It makes me feel good and stronger, and also hungry to work even harder.”

In fact, both Sinner and Minaur had paired up earlier in the week for the doubles competition, but lost in the opening round to eventual champions Marcelo Arevalo and Jean-Julien Rojer.

With this fantastic win, Sinner has moved to sixth place in the latest update of the ATP rankings.

“Let’s see what positive things this week can give me,” said the Italian. “I feel like for sure my confidence is going to be a little bit higher, but also my expectations are going to be higher.”

He added, “I know that I can play very, very well. This is a great result and we’ll see how it goes in the future.”

Sinner will next take part in the Cincinnati Open, where he will either face Francisco Cerundolo or Dusan Lajovic in the second round after receiving a bye. The young Italian will look to carry the good form in the upcoming ATP 1000 Masters before the all-important US Open, which begins on 28th August.
