Murray trains with Djokovic ahead of Australian Open

Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray are making headlines as they train together ahead of the 2025 Australian Open. This partnership, which began when Djokovic appointed Murray as his coach in November 2024, marks a significant shift in both players’ careers.

Djokovic, aiming for an unprecedented 11th Australian Open title and a historic 25th Grand Slam victory, has voiced his confidence in Murray’s insights and strategies, believing they can enhance his game.

Murray, who retired after the Paris Olympics in August 2024, brings a wealth of experience to the coaching role. Known for his analytical approach and resilience, he has been working closely with Djokovic since arriving in Melbourne shortly after Christmas. Their training sessions commenced publicly on January 7, where Murray was seen providing tactical advice during drills on Margaret Court Arena.

This collaboration comes after Djokovic’s disappointing Brisbane International campaign, where he lost to Reilly Opelka in the quarterfinals. The Serbian’s decision to team up with Murray is a reflection of his desire to explore new strategies and adapt his game ahead of the Grand Slam. Djokovic noted that sharing insights about his game with Murray has been both strange and rewarding, given their history as fierce competitors.

The duo’s rivalry spans 36 matches, with Djokovic leading their head-to-head record at 25-11. Their shared experiences on the tour provide a unique dynamic as they now work toward a common goal—adding another major title to Djokovic’s illustrious career.

Ahead of next week’s tournament, Djokovic is seeded seventh and could face some tough opponents like Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz in the later rounds. Both players are keenly aware of the challenges ahead but are optimistic about their partnership’s potential impact on Djokovic’s performance.

With training intensifying in Melbourne, fans and critics alike are looking forward to the outcome of this unexpected alliance on the court. The combination of Djokovic’s unparalleled skill and Murray’s strategic mind could be all the former world number one needs to best his competitors and win the title one more time.
