American tennis icon and current World No. 8 Serena Williams recently defeated Romania’s Mihaela Buzarnescu in a second round clash in the French Open. Williams, who lost the second set, came back strongly in the third to progress through to the third round. The 39-year old defeated Buzarnescu 6-3, 5-7, 6-1.
In the post match interview the Romanian expressed her experience of playing against the 23-time Grand Slam winner. It was her first encounter and hence it was pretty special for the 33-year-old. She revealed that playing Serena Williams was like a dream for her.
“Yeah, it was really, for me, it was like a dream for a long time to play against her, because since I was young, I was following her and her sister,” said Buzarnescu in the interview.
Buzarnescu also revealed that she was following Serena and her sister, Venus Williams since her childhood. Then Romanian went on to say that she has been a fan of the sisters for a long time so it was nothing short of a fangirl moment for her.
The 33-year-old Romanian may have lost the match but she highlighted how it was always her goal to play Serena Williams. Buzarnescu not only played Serena but he also gave a great fight and forced Serena to play the third set.
“Was always like, let’s say, a goal to play against such a legend,” added the 33-year-old player.
Williams did not start her clay court season that well. But now with two wins in the Roland Garros, she is looking to be in good stead. However, in both the matches, Serena was often pushed to her limits and she overcame her challenges with aplomb. She proved that she has her mindset in the right place and she is here to win.
Also with top players like Ashleigh Barty and Naomi Osaka withdrawing from the Grand Slam for various reasons, there is a huge opportunity for Serena Williams to add more silverware to her already illustrious cabinet.
For now the 39-year-old will head onto the third round of the French Open and will face 27-year-old American tennis player Danielle Rose Collins. If Serena Williams keeps up her winning momentum then she will have chances of winning the 24th Grand Slam.
