The 2020 edition of the French Open is in full swing and there are so many top-seeded players in attendance, which is a contrast to what we saw at the US Open that concluded three weeks ago. Tuesday was day 2 of the event and here are some things you should be aware of.
Rafael Nadal, who holds the record for most French Open titles with 12 wins, has scaled through to the next round of the event after beating French Open first-timer Egor Gerasimov 6-4 6-4 6-2. The Spaniard was able to claim victory in a game of 2 hours 5 minutes. If Nadal wins this event, then he would be tied with Roger Federer with the most Grand Slams (20).
Elsewhere, US Open Champion, Dominic Thiem has also advanced to the next stage after winning a game of three sets (6-4 6-3 6-3) against Marin Cilic. Thiem is no stranger to the French Open as he has lost out twice at the finals in the hands of Nadal. Marton Fucsovics sent Daniil Medvedev home after beating him 6-4 7-6 (7-3) 2-6 6-1, a quite heated match.
Number one seed, Novak Djokovic started his French Open campaign on a very high note after he overcame Swedish Mikael Ymer in 3 sets (6-0 6-2 6-3). Stan Wawrinka ended Andy Murray’s stay at the event as he won the entire 3 sets (6-1 6-3 6-2). Lorenzo Giustino set a record for the second-longest French Open match with a record time of six hours five minutes. Giustino won 3 out of 5 sets (0-6 7-6 (9-7) 7-6 (7-3) 2-6 18-16) against opponent Corentin Moutet.
In the women’s singles, former world number one, Serena Williams needed just two sets to move to the next round as she beat Kristie Ahn 7-6 6-0. Her sister, Venus Williams, did not enjoy much luck as she was sent out by Anna Schmiedlova(6-4 6-4).
Jelena Ostapenko defeated American Madison Brengle in just two sets (6-2 6-1). The Pliskova sisters, Karolina and Kristyna, did themselves proud after winning their sets against Mayar Sherif 6-7 6-2 6-4 (Karolina) and Viktoria Kuzmova 6-1 6-2 (Kristyna). British Heather Watson lost against French Fiona Ferro 7-6 6-4.
