Jannik Sinner has everything to become No. 1 in the world, says coach Darren Cahill

Jannik Sinner’s coach Darren Cahill reckons his pupil has everything to become the World No.1 in the ATP Pepperstone rankings. The Italian is currently at number 11 in the rankings but he has shown all the skills to be the best in the world.

Sinner, 21, has been consistently making the quarterfinals of the big tournaments and he would want to be more consistent in the big matches. Sinner recently lost to Daniil Medvedev in the final of the Rotterdam Open and made it to the semifinals of the Indian Wells, where his journey was ended by eventual winner Carlos Alcaraz.

Meanwhile, Darren Cahill has a decorated career as a coach as he has coached players like Andre Agassi, Andy Murray, and Ana Ivanovic. He also helped Simona Halep clinch two Grand Slam titles.

In an interview with Eurosport, “Jannik has everything to become number one in the world. Before my arrival he was already a great player, among the top ten in the rankings: he has incredible weapons and was well trained,” he said.

“Now we need to watch his matches against the best tennis players around and understand what’s keeping him from beating them. Then work on it. It definitely takes time, a couple of years and many match situations,” he added.

The Australian added that Sinner can improve his serve but he is a swift mover on the court and the team’s focus is on strengthening his strengths.

“He can improve his serve, his transition game, he can be dominant from the baseline. But the most important thing, when you train great players, is to keep improving their strengths. Jannik moves incredibly well, so we spend a lot of time on that aspect,” he said.

“It’s great to see how he’s so willing to try new things and try to improve, as long as you don’t stray too far from the type of player he is. It also takes a bit of luck. Being in the right place at the right time. The results come because the champions are not only in the mind, but also in the heart,” he added.

Jannik Sinner will next face Andrey Rublev in Round-of-16 in the ongoing Miami Open.
