Roger Federer walked out on the court for the one final time with his great friend Rafael Nadal when Team Europe took on Team World in the Laver Cup on Friday. Team World duo of Jack Sock and Frances Tiafoe went on to beat the legendary pair as Federer bid an emotional adieu to the game.
The Swiss maestro could not hold back tears as all the members of his team as well as Team World congratulated him on a glittering career. Federer ticked all the right boxes in his career as he won a total of 103 ATP titles, including 20 Grand slams. The 41-year-old claimed it was a perfect journey and he will do it all over again.
When asked about the support of his family throughout his glittering career by Jim Courier, Federer gave credit to his wife, Mirka, for always supporting her.
“My wife is so supportive,” he managed to stammer out. “She could have stopped me a long, long time ago, but she didn’t. She kept me going and allowed me to play. Thank you.”
Federer declared: “It has been a perfect journey. I would do it all over again.”
In fact, this is not the first time when Federer was facing such an emotional moment in his career. He had lost many close encounters and had gone through a similar sea of emotions.
“What I will remember is the faces I saw emotional ,” said Federer later. “The part I was extremely worried about, is taking the microphone. I know how impossible I am on the mic when I am emotional because I had it many times before.
“But I was able to remind myself always on the court again how wonderful this is. This is not the end-end, you know, life goes on. I’m healthy, I’m happy, everything’s great, and this is just a moment in time, you know. This is obviously supposed to be like this.”
Roger Federer will be super proud of his amazing career as he has been a role model for a lot of young players, who idolized him and took the sport because of him.
