Roger Federer recently announced his retirement from the sport after playing his last professional match with Rafael Nadal with the American duo of Jack Sock and Frances Tiafoe at the Laver Cup. After his retirement, Federer received congratulatory messages on his glorious career and the Swiss Maestro admitted that it over-exceeded his expectations.
Federer had bid an emotional goodbye to the sport and a lot of tributes were poured in for him from across the globe.
A lot of nice things were written about Federer in the media as he had a deep impact on the game with his flamboyant play. Many media houses talked about Federer’s character and personality off the court more than his game on the court, which was really pleasing for the veteran.
“It’s been overwhelming to be quite honest, how many nice things have been written about me, a lot of them about my personality and about me as a person,” Roger Federer told the ATP.
“Less almost as me as the tennis player, about my forehand or whatever you want to call it.”
“That’s been a wonderful surprise to me that a lot of people looked or supported me because of maybe my character. That was a bit of an unexpected twist to the story.
“I thought they were gonna talk about his achievements, his accomplishments, what he meant to the game, and that’s it. But it was much more than that.
“It totally over-exceeded my expectations.”
Federer ticked all the right boxes and deserves all the praise for his illustrious career. The Swiss great won a total of 103 titles and he was known for his demeanor and class on the court. The 41-year-old always played the game in the right spirit and set up a great example for the young players.
