Former Roland Garros champion Iga Swiatek will be gearing up for the BNP Paribas Open as she looks to increase her WTA Race rankings propelling her to the WTA Finals. Ahead of the tournament at Indian Wells, the young Pole expressed her excitement with the chance of qualifying for her debut WTA Finals.
Swiatek is currently ranked seventh in the WTA rankings and for now, she is in the race to Guadalajara. However, the Polish youngster shared how she wants to focus on her job at hand at the Indian Wells.
“When we’re actually heading to the end of the Race and we are getting closer to this tournament, I’m just getting excited,” Swiatek said on the media day at the Indian Wells.
“On one side, I would really like to qualify, and it’s really exciting for me,” she continued. “But on the other side, I know that the most important thing is to just stay focused and keep doing the same thing I did during the whole season because sometimes when you just don’t think about what may come, it’s easier.”
The Polish tennis star has stressed time and again how she wants to qualify for the WTA Finals which is scheduled for later this year in Guadalajara, Mexico. While Swiatek knows that a few tournaments are remaining even after the Indian Wells to get there, she wants to reach the points as early as possible.
She also hailed how she has been injury free after a long and hard season. Swiatek is hoping that she can continue with this consistency which helps her reach the prestigious WTA Finals for the first time in her career.
“Still, I know that even if this tournament is not going to go well I still have some chances to get more points,” Swiatek quipped. “I’m just really happy that I still have power. I don’t have any injury. Because it’s the end of the season, many players are coping with that.”
Lastly the 20-year-old highlighted how this was her first full season on tour and how she is happy to carry the same level of energy even at this stage of the tour. Swiatek will face Petra Martic of Croatian in her opening round at the Indian Wells.
