Young Tennis sensation Jannik Sinner was able to survive Roberto Carballes Baena’s test in the second round of the Roland-Garros 2022 as he won 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-3 on Thursday. The Italian has now advanced to the third round of the French Open.
The match was closer than what the scoreline suggests as the Spaniard was able to push the 20-year-old youngster. There were long rallies at the beginning of the match but Sinner was able to hold his ground. This win would have certainly added a lot of confidence to Sinner’s bag and he will look to continue the good show.
Sinner was delighted with his performance in the second round as he won the crucial points in the match.
“For sure it was a tough match, especially in the beginning, long rallies,” Sinner said. “The key was to keep going and trying to make the key points in each set and, I have to say, I’m very happy.”
On the other hand, Sinner will now face America’s Mackenzie Mcdonald in the third round. The American was able to upset 22nd seed Nikoloz Basilashvili by 6-3, 6-1, 6-4, and finished the match within two hours.
Meanwhile, Sinner had beaten Mcdonald in their only meeting so far when he met him in the Citi Open final in Washington. The Italian is expecting a tough challenge from his upcoming opponent.
“I played a final in Washington against him, so it’s going to be tough,” Sinner said. “He’s a great mover, he knows how to play every shot, so I’m expecting a very tough and long match, so let’s see. The first time that we play on clay, it’s something new.”
Sinner has a 26-6 record in the ongoing season and he has not lost a single match against a player, who is below his ranking of 11 in ATP.
