Dominic Thiem’s former coach Gunter Bresnik hailed his professionalism and work ethic

Dominic Thiem has gone through a lot over the last few months. He was sidelined with a wrist injury and could not recover in time to defend his US Open or Indian Wells title. We all know that the former US Open champion is an excellent tennis player but in a recent interview, his former coach Gunter Bresnik hailed his professionalism.

In an interview with Kleine Zeitung, Thiem’s former coach Gunter Bresnik highlighted the Austrian’s work ethic and manners. Bresnik feels that these traits are as important as physical and technical ability. Thiem and Bresnik went different ways in 2019 but there was an ongoing lawsuit which they later settled mutually. However, nothing has changed Bresnik’s perception of the 28-year-old.

Bresnik hailed Thiem’s commitment to the sport and revealed how he would never look at the phone even for a single minute during training sessions.

“Everyone can see that someone is playing good tennis. Of course, physical requirements such as speed or size are also criteria,” Bresnik was quoted as saying by WeLoveTennis. “But for me, they are not the most decisive.”

“If he (Dominic Thiem) was unattended for two minutes, he didn’t look at his cell phone, on the contrary, he caught a ball, did some technical exercises, or played against the wall,” he added.

Bresnik then revealed how he has been a fan of Dennis Shapovalov alongside Lorenzo Musetti and Holger Rune on the men’s tour. Whereas the Austrian picked youngster Leylah Fernandez as his favourite on the WTA tour.

“The player I like the most on the tour is Denis Shapovalov because he plays the most attractive tennis for me,” Bresnik said. “Lorenzo Musetti and Holger Rune are also interesting to me. On the ladies’ side, I really like Fernandez, even though she lost in the US Open final. In terms of playing and technique, her performance is the most beautiful I have seen in a long time.”

Lastly, Bresnik’s formal charge, Dominic Thiem, has revealed some good news. The Austrian does not need to undergo surgery on his wrist, which means he will be back on the court shortly.
