Novak Djokovic has set a new record after defeating Casper Ruud at the final of the Nitto ATP Finals. The win gave the Serbian his sixth ATP Finals title, equalling the record held by former pro player, Roger Federer, who retired in September. The Nitto ATP Finals typically mark the end of the ATP Tour season.
Djokovic was able to claim victory after a game of two sets, beating Ruud 7-5 6-3 to become the oldest person to win the title.
The last time he won the title was in 2015, and he defeated Federer in the final for it. Djokovic won the title back to back between 2012 and 2015. Since then, he appeared in the final twice, in 2016 and 2018, but was defeated both times.
Following the win, Djokovic has moved up three places in the ATP rankings and now holds the number 5 spot. He would also take home $4,740,300 for going through the tournament unbeaten.
Speaking after the game, Djokovic relished the win and how long it took him to lift the title again. He said: “Seven years, it’s been a long time. At the same time, the fact that I waited seven years makes his victory even sweeter and even bigger.
“It’s a huge deal (to end the year with a win). I’ve probably talked about this season and how unusual it is a thousand times, so I’m not going to repeat what most people who follow tennis know. It’s just a big relief and satisfaction.”
He then added: “I don’t know what the future holds, but I know that what I hold in my mind is a huge hunger still to win trophies.” Indeed at age 35, Djokovic continues to prove to us that his best days are far from over, and we should always look forward to him winning whenever he steps on the court.
