Despite handing a walkover in his quarterfinals, Spanish youngster Carlos Alcaraz is happy with his progress at the US Open

Spanish sensation Carlos Alcaraz Garfia has been the biggest talking point in this year’s US Open. The young Spaniard has left everyone in awe with his exceptional display of tennis. He has been so hyped up that people have started comparing him with the likes of compatriot Rafael Nadal and current World No. 1 Novak Djokovic.

However, the youngster has rubbished all those rumours as he wants to continue growing as a tennis player. Alcaraz had a US Open to savour for the rest of his life as he defeated Cameron Norrie first in straight sets followed by France’s Arthur Rinderknech in the second round. However, the biggest upset that he pulled off was beating Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-3, 4-6,7-6,0-6,7-5 in the third round. He continued his daunting run with another resounding win against Germany’s Peter Gojowczyk in the round of 16.

But he was stopped in his tracks when he suffered a right adductor injury and had to hand a walker over to Canada’s Felix Auger Aliassime. He was set and broke down in that game and was not moving naturally right from the start.

During the post match press conference, the youngster addressed the comparisons being made with the ‘Big 3’. He has been compared with Nadal for some time now and after watching some of his matches some people are comparing him with Djokovic. While Alcaraz feels good about it , he does not allow them to get onto his head.

“For me it is good that they compare me with the best,” Alcaraz was quoted as saying by MARCA. “But I do not give it more importance because I try not to put pressure on myself because they expect me to do what these beasts have done. Each one has to make their way.”

The Spanish youngster’s amazing run to the quarterfinals made him the youngest player ever to qualify for the last eight at the Flushing Meadows.  Alcaraz accepted his fate and was happy to see the progress as he defeated several top players to reach the last eight.

“I am happy with my performance here,” Alcaraz said. “This tournament has made me mature a lot. I have played great tennis. A little sad about how it went today, but already looking forward to coming back next year.”
