The World no.1 Daniil Medvedev finally clinched his first title of the season after beating Cameron Norrie in the final of the Los Cabos. The Russian had to fight hard in the first set but he was at his lethal best in the second to win the match by 7-5, 6-0.
Medvedev was delighted after his performance and feels he had to work hard in the game. The 26-year-old didn’t drop a single set throughout the tournament as he brought his best to the table after missing Wimbledon due to a ban on Russian players.
“Every match was very good, but the final is always special,” Medvedev said after the match.
“In the final you play the best player of this week, so it’s always a high-level match and I’m really happy that I managed to show some good level, some good shots in such an important match.”
“It was not easy. Cam is an amazing player, so it was really intense. When you play against Cam, you know that you have to fight for every point.”
Cameron Norrie, on the other hand, was the reigning champion at Los Cabos but could not replicate his success. The Briton admitted that Medvedev was too good for him in the final and he had no answers to his onslaught.
“I fought as hard as I could, but Daniil, he was too good,” Norrie said. “Well done to you and your team, definitely deserved it this week.”
Meanwhile, Medvedev will look to continue his good form in the upcoming US Open and defend his title at the New York Major. The Russian had beaten Novak Djokovic in 2021 in straight sets to win his first Slam title and he will be looking to add to his tally.
Earlier in the season, Medvedev lost to Rafael Nadal in the final of the Australian Open in an emphatic five-set contest.
