American tennis prospect Coco Gauff was in Washington, featuring for the women’s invitational Citi Open. This was the first time she returned to action since contracting COVID-19 last month. It led to her withdrawal from the Tokyo Olympics.
But now the youngster is back and she had no problem beating Victoria Azarenka in the first round of the invitational event. But then she lost to Jessica Pegula bringing an end to her journey in Washington.
She then sat down for some interviews mostly on her health and recovery after the disease and plans for the upcoming events, etc.
The 17-year-old opened up on a lot of aspects but when asked which player she would like to be friends with, Gauff immediately took Nick Kyrgios’ name. ” Definitely Nick Kyrgios. On court he’s a super funny guy and off court super kind,” said Gauff.
“He probably doesn’t know this but I first hit with him when I was 12 I believe at the Miami Open. He also played ping-pong with my brother back in the Citi Open last year.”
The interview led to a fun social media interaction between the two as they decided to pair up for the Mixed Doubles at the Australian Open. Now only time will tell whether it will happen seriously or not. Apart from that the Australian was kind enough to shower praises on Gauff and claimed that she is destined to do a lot of great things in tennis.
“Anytime. You are going to do great things in this sport and I can’t wait to watch. I got plenty more ping pong lessons as well,” Kyrgios wrote on Twitter as reply to Gauff’s comments.
The Australian then went on ask gauff whether she would like to pair up with him for the mixed doubles at the Australian Open. The 17-year-old immediately agreed.
The whole thing became a point of discussion for the tennis fans on Twitter as they suggested various nicknames of the duo pairing up for Australia next year.
Kyrgios recently paired up with Venus Williams at the Wimbledon and they were fun to watch. Although they were not that successful as Kyrgios had to withdraw after winning the first round as he suffered an abdominal injury.
So if Coco Gauff and Nick Kyrgios eventually decide to pair up ahead of the Australian Open next year then it will be fun to watch them on court.
