Belinda Bencic feels no added pressure to be the Swiss flag bearer at the US Open in absence of Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka

Tennis in Switzerland has been dominated by two gentlemen, Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka. However, now there is another individual in the mix who wants to emulate the highs of both Federer and Wawrinka in future. With both the men at the twilight of their careers, Belinda Bencic is the new hope for the Swiss in tennis.

Bencic recently revealed that she wishes to emulate Federer and Wawrinka like dominance in tennis. Hence she feels that apart from her the likes of Jil Teichmann, Viktorija Golubic and Voegele have the potential to emulate Federer-Wawrinka in the coming years.

The 24-year-old has shown great signs of growth and development as a player. She won the gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics in Women’s singles which none of Federer and Wawrinka has achieved in their career yet. They have won a Doubles gold medal as they played together in the Beijing Olympics.

With both the stalwarts way past their prime, a lot of people feel that Bencic will be the new Swiss sensation. She was even asked about this at a press conference after her first-round win in the US Open. The 24-year-old was not interested in being the flagbearer as she felt that her female compatriots are also developing rapidly and will be consistent at this level pretty soon.

“I don’t think so (if she feels pressure),” Bencic said. “I feel like we have, I mean, we have four Swiss women now in the main draw, so I think that’s great.”

The Olympic gold medallist believes that she is not stealing all the limelight. She in fact wants to make her country proud by putting up a solid performance at the US Open. She revealed how she was proud to carry the national flag in absence of Federer and Wawrinka at the Tokyo Olympics.

“I don’t feel like I’m the only one that their eyes are on me,” Bencic said. “For sure I’m very happy and like proud to be kind of holding the Swiss flag up on the tournaments that Roger (Federer) and Stan (Wawrinka) cannot play.”

Lastly, the World No. 12 feels that pressure is a privilege for her to perform even better as she feels proud to grow up in a country with such a rich tennis legacy.

“But for me, it’s not a pressure at all, because to even kind of have this chance in Switzerland, because Switzerland is a very country that has great players, so a little bit spoiled maybe in this,” she added. “But I don’t see this as pressure. I see it for sure as a privilege.”Tennis in Switzerland has been dominated by two gentlemen, Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka.
