Teenager Holger Rune sent shockwaves around the tennis world on Sunday when he defeated former world number one, Novak Djokovic, to win the Paris Masters title, his third career title.
The win came just weeks after Rune defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas at the Stockholm Open final. With Sunday’s victory, the 19-year-old has now become the new world number 10, his highest ranking to date.
Rune, who won his first ATP title back in April this year, beat Djokovic 3-6, 6-3, 7-5. After dropping the first set, the Danish teenager came back stronger in the remaining two sets, eventually winning the match. The victory denied the world number seven the chance of a record seventh Paris Masters title.
But Djokovic is not the only one who fell into the hands of the teenager Carlos Alcaraz, Felix Auger-Aliassime, Andrey Rublev, all in the top 10, were among the players Rune defeated last week.
Speaking after the match, Djokovic praised Rune for the victory, adding that his future was bright. He said: “I’m not happy that you beat me, but on the other hand, I’m happy for you because I like your personality. You’re a very dedicated guy who loves tennis.
“You’ve put in a lot of hours of hard work, it’s paying off for you, and your future is bright.”
In his turn, Rune said that Djokovic was one of the players he looked up to, and he was glad to share the court with him: “You’re one of my favourite players. I’ve watched you since you were a kid. It’s a pleasure to share the court with you.”
It has been quite an amazing year for Rune, as he now has a Masters 1000 title in his bag. He has played in five finals this year so far and won three of them, and with his level of play on Sunday, there is no doubt that we will see a lot more of him in the coming months.
