Some players have expressed their support and faith in Jos Buttler following England’s 10 wicket-loss to India in a One-day International match on Tuesday. The match was the first in a three-ODI series currently taking place in England. The 10-wicket margin is the first for England at home, and the last time they were beaten like that was an away game 11 years ago. Buttler recently took over from Eoin Morgan as England’s captain.
But the players are not dismayed and are very sure that they would bounce back and reclaim their victory in the remaining two matches. Speaking on the loss, Moeen Ali said it was a good thing, saying that lessons can be learned from losses: “It is not that we don’t want to win now, but you don’t want to win all of the games.
“It is a good thing. Sometimes you learn more from losing as well.”
Ali also commented on Buttler, stating that the team would be fine under his captaincy: “Jos is a brilliant leader. He has done it over the years when Eoin hasn’t played, but it is going to take a couple of games in all the formats.
“As a new captain, no matter how cool you are, you want to get off to a winning start, but he knows there is a long way to go, and the team will be fine.”
Also speaking about Buttler, former captain Morgan also expressed his belief in him, saying that Buttler had all the experience to properly lead England: “I know what this feels like. It’s not nice – you focus inwards, not outwards.
“But, having had the experience both playing and leading previously that Jos has had, he will see this as an opportunity in that changing room to reiterate a very clear and strong message about where they are going and what they’re doing.”
If there is anybody in a better position to assess Buttler, it is Morgan. Not only is he the immediate former captain, but he was deputised by Buttler, who took charge of some games when Morgan was unavailable.
Since taking over, England has lost 3 games out of 4, which is pretty significant, but with the amount of faith and support the players are putting on Buttler, it would be interesting to see how well things can date for them.
England’s next game against India is on Thursday.
