Earlier this week, it was announced that the Professional Fighters League (PFL) has officially acquired Bellator MMA in a blockbuster deal. This acquisition is expected to position the combined entity as a strong competitor to the UFC and reshape the current state of MMA in the highest form.
PFL Chairman, Donn Davis emphasised the strength of the fighter rosters, stating that they are “equal to UFC,” with both organizations having 30% of fighters in the Top 25 world rankings. The deal aims to create a reimagined Bellator brand that will continue to operate independently and under better terms for fighters. One of the key features will be cross-promotion championship fights, pitting PFL champions against Bellator champions in mega-events scheduled for next year.
Peter Murray, CEO of PFL, expressed excitement about bringing fans what they have been asking for: “best vs. best with the PFL champions vs. Bellator champions mega-event.”
Most importantly, this latest move is likely to warm the hearts of fighters currently signed to the Bellator roster, especially regarding their place in the sport in the years to come. Details about the first event under the new ownership are expected to be revealed in the coming weeks.
Donn Davis also shared plans for the Bellator brand to continue as a standalone entity, with the launch of the “Bellator International Champions Series” in 2024. This series will consist of eight major fight events hosted in various global cities, featuring two co-main fights competing for championship belts.
The PFL platform now includes five live fight franchises, including the PFL League Season, PFL PPV Super Fights, PFL Challenger Series, and PFL International Leagues. With this acquisition, PFL is set out to offer a comprehensive year-round product to serve fans and media partners.
As both PFL and Bellator have garnered attention in the MMA world, this acquisition could potentially reshape how MMA events and promotions are structured in the future. It could also bring about a competition that is just as exciting and important, if not more, than the UFC.
