Former UFC Light heavyweight champion Jan Blachowicz has talked about fighting middleweight champion Israel Adesanya again.
The two met last year’s match when Adesanya competed in the light heavyweight division, hoping to win the belt from Blachowicz, but he lost via unanimous decision.
That fight marked his first professional loss as well, but he continued to be the UFC middleweight champion and has won three fights since then. Adesanya’s most recent fight, against Jared Cannonier, was criticized for being boring and lacking so much action, even though Adesanya emerged victorious, although by unanimous decision.
According to Blachowicz, Adesanya has remained careful since his loss as he would not like to have another one. The loss to Blachowicz did not matter as it was in another division where he was fighting for the first time. But Adesanya knows that losing again would end his reign as champ, and he is not ready to leave that position yet.
Speaking at a radio show recently, Blachowicz said that fighting Adesanya again would help him overcome that feeling. He revealed that he was ready to cut down to the approved weight for the middleweight division just to make the fight happen: “Maybe this is the reason that now he will be very careful in the fights to not make any mistakes.
“Just don’t lose the fight. Maybe I have to cut the weight and give him rematch in his category.
“If I have a chance, why not? For Izzy and his belt, to fight for the belt? I can try.”
Blachowicz motive might seem altruistic, but he also has his interests. Facing Adesanya now, and winning, could make him the new champion of the middleweight division. But a rematch between the two, in the middleweight division would not be happening anytime soon as there are about 3 fighters in line for the middleweight title.
