Logician maintains unbeaten record race at Doncaster

Logician has maintained his unbeaten record by winning the prestigious St Leger at Doncaster to give jockey Frankie Dettori his sixth win in the Group One race. The horse which is 5-6 favourite emerged victorious by four lengths giving his trainer, John Gosden his fifth success at the meeting.

Ridden by 49-year-old Franny Norton, Sir Ron Priestley emerged first runner-up with 40-1 shot Nayef Road in third. It could be recalled that the race which was one-mile-and-six-furlong was Logician’s fifth win in succession. Speaking with ITV Racing on the victory, Dettori, who noted that the horse is the favourite described the success as an amazing feeling adding that with 30,000 spectators, he delivered.

While noting that the horse is a speedy one, he said he is just beginning to show the class he is made of. According to him, Logician runs five times with plenty of things in his locker. Another horse Trainer Aidan O’Brien, who had three horses in the race was aiming for his third win in three years but emerged fourth with Sir Dragonet.

Dettori had emerged in 1995, 1996, 2005, 2006 and 2008 edition of the showpiece. To emerge as the winner, Dettor,i who nestled towards the rear through the early stages sweet led down the Town Moor straight after taking his time before moving sweetly down, swept to the front when he asked the grey to quicken a fair way out.

Despite Sir Dragonet’s brief threat to make a race of it, Logician was the only one horse in it. Dettori was able to ease up close home for a two-and-a-quarter length success from Sir Ron Priestley, who ran a big race for Mark Johnston in the hands of Franny Norton. Speaking to Sky Sports on the victory, Gosden noted that it could be seen that Frankie’s hands were higher than usual before he eventually relaxed.

Knowing fully well the type of race the team is in, he said the horse stayed the trip well rather than it being tested. While stating that he’s a mile-and-a-half horse, he said Prince Khalid was keen because he bred lovely horses and wanted to win a Classic for Frankel having won him two now; St Leger and the Oaks (with Anapurna).
