Two-time Formula 1 world champion winner, Max Verstappen, won his 14th race of the season at the Mexico City Grand Prix, which took place on Sunday. With the win, Verstappen set a new record for most wins in a formula 1 season. Before this, the record for the most wins in a formula 1 season was jointly held by Michael Schumacher and Sebastian Vettel.
Verstappen, who is enjoying his reign as the world champion for the second year in a row, beat off Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton, who finished second place. Mercedes had a good day on Sunday, as it seems they have been hard at work on their car problems. Although they failed to go home with the first position, Hamilton’s second-place win was proof that Mercedes has been working on making the car better, even though they are not in the title conversation for the first time in years.
Verstappen was announced as the 2022 world champion after winning the Japanese Grand Prix in October. Unlike last season when Verstappen had to fight with veteran Hamilton, he has enjoyed a smooth ride to victory this season.
But the Dutchman is not ready to quit yet as he has won the next two races after that. His presence on the track on Sunday denied Mercedes their first win of the season. Verstappen’s teammate, Sergio Perez, finished third to complete the podium, while Mercedes’s George Russell finished fourth.
With just two races left this season, the Brazilian GP and Abu Dhabi GP, it would be interesting to see how Mercedes fares as they try not to end the season winless. Whatever Verstappen does at this point might only add to his personal record, as he has completed this season already.
