Mercedes has revealed their 2023 season Formula One car, the W14, in a unique live presentation from Silverstone, showcasing an all-black livery. Following Ferrari’s recent launch of their 2023 challenger, Mercedes unveiled their new car, which they hope will help them achieve regular race wins and success in the championship.
The latest creation from the team marks a return to the all-black colorway they previously ran in 2020 and 2021, after a year spent in their traditional silver scheme. The reveal was attended by team principal Toto Wolff, drivers Lewis Hamilton and George Russell, and new reserve driver Mick Schumacher.
After a tumultuous 2022 season that started with severe proposing, Mercedes is looking to bounce back to a more successful season in 2023. The team’s hard work and updates to the W13 led them back to their winning ways last year, earning them third place in the constructors’ standings.
Wolff stated that the team’s expectations and hopes are always high, with a goal of fighting for a World Championship. However, last year’s competition was fierce, and they are currently playing catch-up. Racing at the front requires resilience, teamwork, and determination. Mercedes is ready to tackle every challenge, putting the team first and giving their all to regain their position.
The team’s return to an all-black livery is predominantly made of exposed carbon fiber to shed as many grams as possible. Wolff noted that the team was overweight last year, and they have made every effort to shave off each gram. The new car will feature some raw carbon bits, along with some matte black painted parts.
Mercedes initially changed to the black livery in 2020 to support diversity and equality causes, which are always a priority for the team. The color black is now part of the team’s DNA, and they are delighted to return to it.
The shakedown of the new car is set to take place at the British Grand Prix venue, marking the beginning of Mercedes’ 2023 season preparations. The team’s competitors were incredibly strong last year, but Mercedes is more determined than ever to return to the top. With their new car and continued hard work, the team is looking forward to a successful 2023 season.
