Oscar Piastri secured his third career victory, leading a one-two finish for the McLaren alongside Lando Norris at the Chinese Grand Prix on Sunday.
The race showed how much McLaren is ready to own this season, with their second win in a row following last week’s victory in Australia. Mercedes’ George Russell finished third, for the second time this season, to complete the podium.
Piastri started the weekend on a good note after claiming his maiden pole position on Saturday. The weekend also featured the first sprint race of the season, which was won by Lewis Hamilton, who secured Ferrari’s first victory of the season and fended off Max Verstappen in a closely-fought contest.
The main event saw Piastri lead the pack from start to finish. The Australian rookie managed to stay composed while under intense pressure, maintaining his position through all 56 laps. His teammate Norris initially faced challenges from Russell but managed to hold onto second place despite late brake issues that required careful management.
The race was relatively incident-free, though Fernando Alonso retired early due to brake problems. Yuki Tsunoda suffered front wing damage but managed to finish outside the points.
Seven-time world champion Hamilton could not build on his Sprint victory after he and teammate Charles Leclerc were disqualified due to excessive plank wear and an underweight car. The disqualification came after both drivers finished fifth and sixth, respectively. Ferrari released a statement at the end of the race, saying they would learn from the incident and ensure a repeat never occurs.
McLaren’s one-two finish has launched them to the top of the Constructors’ Championship, where they now lead Mercedes by 25 points and Red Bull by 42. Norris retained his lead in the Drivers’ Championship despite Piastri’s victory. They are now the team to beat as we head further into the season.
