Formula 1 has announced that the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix in Imola would be on the F1 calendar till 2025. The race in Imola was last held in 2006 until it was added back to the calendar in 2020 to make up for the races that had to be cancelled due to the pandemic. It was held last year, and it is set to hold this year in April.
The Imola GP was first held in 1981 and was on the calendar every year until 2006. Then, it was known as the San Marino Grand Prix. When it was added back to the calendar, the name was changed to reflect the Emilia-Romagna province where the race holds.
When the race was added back in 2020, it was supposed to run for a three-year period. Speaking on the extension of the race, F1 chief executive Stefano Domenicali said, “I am delighted that we will be continuing our excellent partnership with Imola for the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix until 2025.
“The circuit is iconic and has been part of the history of our sport, and they have done an incredible job of hosting two races during the pandemic. It is a proud moment for our Italian fans to host two races and for all our fans around the world to see this fantastic circuit on the calendar for the future.” Domenicali grew up in Imola, which was also where he began his F1 career.
The Emilia-Romagna GP is one of two races that holds in Italy, the second being the Italian GP, which holds in Monza.
The 2022 Formula One season would begin on March 20, with the Bahrain GP. One key change this season is that Haas would have to find a new driver in such a short space of time after sacking Russian driver Nikita Mazepin. They also terminated their partnership with fertilizer company Uralkali, a company partly owned by Nikita’s father. This is coming as sports, not just F1, continue to take steps against Russian competitors over the recent invasion of Ukraine.
