Lewis Hamilton faced a setback on Wednesday, his second day of testing with Ferrari at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. The seven-time world champion crashed while driving the 2023 SF-23 car, losing control in the final sector, which features high-speed right-hand corners.
Fortunately, Hamilton emerged uninjured from the incident, although the car sustained significant damage to its suspension and aerodynamic components.
This test session is crucial for Hamilton as he transitions from Mercedes to Ferrari after 12 years. He had previously completed exploratory laps at Ferrari’s Fiorano track without issues. The team is working diligently to repair the car to allow teammate Charles Leclerc to continue testing, as Hamilton’s crash delayed Leclerc’s scheduled run.
Ferrari management remains unconcerned about the crash, viewing it as a normal part of acclimating to a new vehicle and team dynamics. Hamilton’s experience and skill are expected to help him quickly adapt to the challenges posed by the car. The team has limited mileage due to testing regulations, making these sessions vital for both drivers as they prepare for the upcoming season, which kicks off with the Australian Grand Prix in mid-March.
Despite this incident, Hamilton’s enthusiasm for his new role at Ferrari remains high. He received a warm welcome during his initial visit to the team’s headquarters and is eager to contribute to Ferrari’s pursuit of a championship title, which has eluded them since 2007.
Even though the crash was an unfortunate event, it serves as part of Hamilton’s learning curve with his new team. The incident also brings to the fore why these tests are necessary as it allows drivers, both new and old, become better acquainted with the team’s technology before the season starts.
