The popular team will create a Performance Development department after three disappointing races to start the new Formula 1 season.
Working for the Scuderia Ferrari Formula 1 team isn’t easy because they clearly have no patience. Someone there thought that enough is enough. Three disappointing races to start the season is unacceptable for them.
Team principal Mattia Binotto has been rumored to be on the hot seat but he managed to survive this latest team shakeup. The dominoes are falling though.
Ferrari announced on their official website that the team is restructuring their technical department.
According to team leadership “a chain of command that is more focused and simplified and provides the heads of each department the necessary powers to achieve their objectives” will be put in place.
Ferrari created a performance development department, led by Enrico Cardile. The rest of Ferrari’s power structure is unchanged.
Enrico Gualtieri is still in charge of the power unit, Laurent Mekies remains the sporting director and in charge of trackside activities. Simone Resta, on the other hand, will continue to lead the Chassis Engineering department. Binotto will stay as team principal and managing director.
Ferrari is in a disappointing fifth place in the Formula 1 Constructors’ Championship, already 94 points behind team-leading Mercedes-AMG Petronas.
As for the drivers, Charles Leclerc is seventh and Sebastian Vettel 10th. Leclerc is 45 points, nearly two full races, behind Lewis Hamilton for first place.
“As hinted at a few days ago, we are making changes to the technical side of the organization so as to speed up the design and development on the car performance front,” Binotto said. “A change of direction was needed to define clear lines of responsibility and working processes, while reaffirming the company’s faith in its technical talent pool.
The department run by Enrico Cardile will be able to count on the experience of Rory Byrne and established engineers such as David Sanchez. It will be the cornerstone of the car’s development.”
