Ferrari has announced that they would make changes to their technical department following their poor performance since the season began earlier this month. There have been 3 races already, and Team Ferrari is currently fifth in the Constructor’s Championship.
Their best performance this season was when Charles Leclerc took second place in the Austrian GP. Leclerc and Sebastian Vettel took 19th and 20th place, respectively, in the Hungarian GP that took place last weekend.
The woeful performance they have exhibited so far is no way to start the season, and if they plan to go far this season, then they have to do a bit of work. For that, the Ferrari management has made some changes that would turn things around in their favour of the changes included the creation of a Performance Development department, which, in Ferrari’s words, involves “instituting a chain of command that is more focused and simplified and provides the heads of each department the necessary powers to achieve their objectives.” Long time employee, Enrico Cardile, who was head of aerodynamics, would head this new department.
Speaking on the development, the team’s principal officer, Mattia Binotto, said, “As hinted at a few days ago, we are making changes to the technical side of the organisation so as to speed up the design and development on the car performance front. A change of direction was needed to define clear lines of responsibility and working processes while reaffirming the company’s faith in its technical talent pool.”
Another big change the team is making is giving ace designer Rory Byrne a bigger role. This would include working on the design of the 2022 car to fit with new regulations that would be up in place by then. All of these, according to Binotto, is to “lay the foundations of a process which should lead to a new and enduring winning cycle.”
