    Australian Grand Prix preview

    March 14, 2025

The Formula 1 season is set to kick off this weekend with the Australian Grand Prix, marking the first time since 2019 that Melbourne has hosted the opening race of the championship. This return to Albert Park is the resumption of a tradition that was interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, which led to Bahrain taking over as the season opener in recent years.

Just before the official start of the season, several key changes and storylines are worth taking note of. One of the major rule changes this year is the elimination of the fastest lap bonus point, which had been a part of the championship since 2019.

This change aims to simplify the scoring system, although some fans might miss the added excitement it brought to the closing stages of races.

Additionally, stricter testing for rear wings will be implemented to prevent excessive flexing, ensuring a more level playing field in terms of aerodynamics.

The driver lineup for 2025 includes several notable changes, with Lewis Hamilton now in the bright Ferrari red, taking over from Carlos Sainz, who has joined Williams. McLaren, the reigning Constructors’ Champion, is viewed as a strong contender ahead of the Australian GP, with Lando Norris being tipped as a favorite to win, although the British racer has been careful about the expectations on him and his team.

Red Bull’s performance, led by reigning champion Max Verstappen, remains somewhat of a mystery following preseason testing. Still, it’s important to keep in mind that preseason testing performance is never an indication of how things will fare when the season starts.

The Albert Park circuit, the venue of Sunday’s race, has undergone changes in recent years, including a shorter layout with fewer turns, which should shake up the racing experience. Weather conditions are also expected to play a role, with high temperatures on Saturday potentially giving way to rain on Sunday, but there’s no certainty about that.

As the first race of the season, enthusiasts, fans, crew members, and drivers have a lot of expectations going into Australia. The first race may not always matter in the long run, but it provides valuable insight into how teams are expected to perform, which is something we would all get to witness on Sunday.
