Veteran driver, Fernando Alonso has expressed his strong displeasure over recent rumours suggesting he is considering making a move from his current team, Aston Martin, to Red Bull Racing. These speculations started circulating immediately after the conclusion of the Mexico City Grand Prix, creating quite a buzz within the motorsports community, and the two-time world champion does not appreciate the talks.
Alonso has been quick to dismiss the rumours, calling them “normal paddock rumours” and laballed them as nothing more than attempts by certain individuals to generate online interest and followers. He did not hide his annoyance and found it necessary to clarify the situation, stressing that such rumors are not to be taken lightly.
In fact, he went a step further, mentioning that there should be “consequences” for spreading such unfounded claims. However, he refrained from specifying what these consequences would entail, leaving that part open to interpretation.
Alonso’s current contract with Aston Martin runs till the end of 2024. On the other hand, Red Bull Racing has stated its intention to retain Sergio Perez, their second driver, for the upcoming season, and there is no sign that they will let Max Verstappen go any time soon. This means there is no chance that they are ready to receive any new drivers until after 2024.
These rumours have not only served as a source of annoyance for Alonso; they have also had a disruptive effect on his team, Aston Martin. The team started the 2023 season on a high, with six podium finishes in the first eight races. However, their performance has seen a noticeable decline in recent races, affecting both Alonso and his teammate, Lance Stroll.
Despite these current challenges, Alonso emphasised the positive aspects of Aston Martin’s 2023 campaign, which includes substantial growth in the team’s size and capabilities. This year, they’ve secured multiple podium finishes and gathered 200 more points compared to the previous season, showcasing their progress towards becoming a more organized team.
