Australian international cricketer David Warner is reportedly considering retirement from international cricket. The left-handed opening batsman has had a successful international career, with numerous records and accolades to his name. According to him, the 2024 T20 World Cup in the USA and the Caribbean could be his last international cricket game.
Warner’s international career began in 2011 when he made his debut for Australia in a Twenty20 match against South Africa. He quickly established himself as one of the top batsmen in the world and has since gone on to become one of the most successful opening batsmen in Australian cricket history.
Speaking with SkySports on Thursday, Warner gave a hint as to when he would most likely retire from international cricket. He said: “2024 will most likely be the last year of my international career. I’ve got my sights set on the 2024 (T20) World Cup as well, so finishing in the Americas (North America and Caribbean islands), that’d be nice to top it off with a win over there, pending selection.”
In 2015, Warner played a key role in Australia’s victorious Cricket World Cup campaign, scoring 547 runs in the tournament. He was also a key player in the team’s successful Ashes series against England in 2017-2018, scoring 641 runs in the series.
However, Warner’s career has not been without controversy. In 2018, he was involved in a ball-tampering scandal that resulted in a year-long ban from international cricket. Since his return to the team, Warner has struggled to regain his form, and many believe that this, along with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on the cricket schedule, has contributed to his decision to consider retirement.
Despite his struggles, Warner remains one of the most talented and successful cricketers of his generation. His contributions to the Australian team will not be forgotten, and his fans will be sad to see him go if he chooses to retire.
