Harry Brook has been named the new captain of England’s white-ball cricket teams, taking over from Jos Buttler. The announcement comes after Buttler stepped down following England’s disappointing group-stage exit in the ICC Champions Trophy earlier this year. At just 26 years old, Brook assumes leadership of both the T20 and ODI sides, making him one of the youngest people to hold that position.
Brook has been one of England’s standout players since making his international debut in 2022. His fearless approach and ability to adapt to different situations quickly made him a key figure across all formats of the game.
In white-ball cricket, Brook has already made a strong impression, scoring 816 runs in 26 ODIs and featuring in 44 T20Is with several match-winning performances. His contributions were vital during England’s T20 World Cup campaign in 2022, where they lifted the trophy.
The decision to hand Brook the captaincy comes after months of speculation. Having served as vice-captain under Buttler and even leading the team briefly during an ODI series against Australia last year, Brook was seen as a natural successor. Rob Key, managing director of England men’s cricket, highlighted Brook’s leadership qualities and his ability to inspire those around him as key reasons for his selection.
Brook himself spoke about the honor of leading his country, reflecting on how far he has come since his early days playing cricket in Yorkshire. “Ever since I was a kid playing cricket at Burley in Wharfedale, I dreamed of representing Yorkshire, playing for England, and maybe one day leading the team,” he said. “To now be given that chance means a great deal to me.” He also acknowledged the strength of the current squad and expressed confidence in their ability to achieve success together.
His first test as captain will come in May when England hosts the West Indies for three ODIs and three T20Is. This series will provide him with an early opportunity to show how he intends to lead now and prepare him for future challenges. With a packed calendar ahead, including preparations for the next T20 World Cup in 2026, Brook will have plenty on his plate as he begins this new chapter.
