Tiger Woods has strongly reasserted his dedication to professional golf, dismissing recent suggestions that he should consider retirement. The 48-year-old golf veteran addressed the media ahead of The Open Championship, responding to comments made by fellow golfer Colin Montgomerie.
The former world number one pointedly reminded critics of his status as a past Open champion, which grants him an exemption to play in the tournament until he turns 60, and would only retire when he decides to do so.
“Well, as a past champion, I’m exempt until I’m 60. Colin’s not. He’s not a past champion, so he’s not exempt. So he doesn’t get the right to make that decision. I do. When I get to his age I get to make that decision. He doesn’t.” Woods asserted.
Woods, who has faced significant physical challenges following a severe car accident in 2021, emphasized that the decision to continue his career rests solely with him.
Despite a challenging year that has seen him struggle in major tournaments, the 15-time major winner remains optimistic about his future in golf. He revealed that he has intensified his training regimen, noting improvements in his physical condition. “I’ve been training a lot better,” Woods said. “We’ve been busting it pretty hard in the gym, which has been good. Body’s been feeling better to be able to do such things, and it translates on being able to hit the ball better.”
All eyes are on Woods at this time as he attempts to balance his legendary competitive spirit with the realities of his physical condition.
