Former world number one, Jon Rahm, has called on the DP World Tour and the PGA Tour to come together and agree if LIV Golf Invitational players are going to be allowed at this year’s Ryder Cup. The Ryder Cup is an event between Team United States and Team Europe. The event is administered by the PGA through its various chapters in the US and Europe.
Last year, the PGA banned players who moved to the LIV Series from participating in all PGA events, which includes the Ryder Cup. But the DP World Tour has not been so hard-pressed against players who defected.
Rahm said it was necessary to have a discussion between the two leagues and come to an agreement to avoid a situation where one team allows players from the LIV and the other does not when the Ryder Cup starts. He made his opinion known ahead of the Sentry Tournament of Champions.
He said: “There’s some people that are going to have to make some tough choices, right? A little bit of that is out of my reach. I hope the PGA of America and European Tour make a decision together.
“Even if they decide not to on that side, I think it’s going to give an opportunity for a lot of great young players to show up and have the chance in Europe. It’s just going to be an opportunity for all of them.”
Rahm’s call and his message is quite necessary at this point. It would be very helpful if the existing leagues can meet and decide what to do with players who have defected to the Saudi-backed league. Such a meeting, regardless of the outcome, would prevent issues later on in the season.
