The PGA Tour has selected a new location for its World Wide Technology Championship. This year’s tournament will take place at El Cardonal Golf Course in Diamante Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Designed by none other than five-time Masters champion Tiger Woods, the 18-hole, par-72 course is considered one of the most challenging courses in the world.
According to the TGR Design website, the layout of El Cardonal is inspired by the classic Golden Age courses of the West Coast that Tiger played on growing up. The course encourages strategic decision-making, with several options for navigating each hole, and is designed to reward golfers who make sound decisions. The existing arroyos and native dunes that traverse the site, along with well-placed fairway bunkers, provide ample risk-reward opportunities off the tees.
The course’s natural, irregular contours on the fairways, along with high-faced greenside bunkers, add to the course’s old-style look and feel. With dramatic long-range views of the Pacific Ocean, the championship course offers wide landing areas that provide different angles and options to approach the greens while promoting playability for golfers of all skill levels.
The PGA Tour has held tournaments in Mexico since 2007, and the World Wide Technology Championship was previously held at El Camaleón Mayakoba Golf Club in Playa del Carmen. The switch to El Cardonal comes after 16 years of hosting the tournament at the former course. LIV Golf and CEO Greg Norman designed the Playa del Carmen course, which hosted its first tournament of the 2023 season in February.
This year’s World Wide Technology Championship will see 132 golfers vying for the top prize and 500 FedExCup points. The PGA Tour has not yet announced a specific date for the tournament, but it is expected to take place later this year. The Mexico Open at Vidanta is the other FedEx Cup event that takes place in the country.
The Valero Texas Open is the next PGA Tour event, which will be held from March 30 to April 2 at TPC San Antonio. The Master’s Tournament at Augusta National Golf Club is set for April 6-9, and golf enthusiasts are eagerly anticipating another great season of the sport.
