Hideki Matsuyama made history at The Sentry tournament in Kapalua, Hawaii, by breaking the PGA Tour record for the lowest score in relation to par over 72 holes. His final round of 65 brought his total to an astonishing 35-under par 257, surpassing the previous record of 34-under set by Cameron Smith in 2022.
Collin Morikawa finished three shots behind in second place, with Sungjae Im in third place at 39 under.
Matsuyama’s performance included two eagles and 33 birdies throughout the tournament, with only two bogeys. He started the final round with a one-shot lead over Collin Morikawa and quickly extended it by holing an eagle from 107 yards on the third hole.
Despite Morikawa’s strong play, including a final round of 67, Matsuyama maintained control, finishing three strokes ahead, which is something Morikawa commented on after the match: “Today he just never let up. I just knew I had to be on top of everything and just kind of let a few slip on that front nine.”
The decisive moment came on the par-5 18th hole when Matsuyama sank an eight-foot birdie putt, solidifying his record-setting victory. “That last putt felt like it was going to be the record,” he remarked after the match, expressing his joy through a translator. This win marks Matsuyama’s 11th career title on the PGA Tour and his third victory in the last ten months, marking his return to form after a challenging period.
Matsuyama’s triumph is particularly noteworthy given that he had limited practice leading up to the tournament due to health issues. He switched to a new putter just days before the event, which proved beneficial as he adapted quickly to its feel. His success at The Sentry also adds to his legacy as one of Japan’s top golfers and serves as proof of his potential for continued success in the upcoming season.
With this victory, Matsuyama has now earned over $60 million in career earnings and is poised for further achievements as he prepares for future tournaments, including next week’s Sony Open in Oahu.
