He finished one shot ahead of Spaniard Jon Rahm, who started the game one shot ahead. This would be Leishman’s fifth PGA tour title. Leishman ended Saturday night in the seventh position, being four shots behind Rahm. On Sunday, however, things were very different as he showed that he was there to win, upsetting the scoreboard as he made five birdies in just eight holes, starting with birdies at the first two holes, taking it to seven birdies in thirteen holes. He continued making birdies, outpacing everyone else on the course. Rahm was relentless to keep up, after fumbling earlier.
As for the Australian, he made good work of the lead he had earlier created. He did good at the 14th and 15th hole, but could not prevent himself from making a bogey at the hole before the last.
He did not let that bother him as he went on and made a fine shot for the 18th hole. Rahm, too went on, hoping to take the game into a playoff, but a costly bogey slowed him down as before he could recover, Leishman had been declared the winner.
For Leishman, his win means big as it is the first time he would win since 2018 at the CIMB Classic. Also, he has secured himself the PGA Tour membership from 2021 to 2022. His win also came on Australian Day as he hopes that his victory would give his people something to be happy about.
Rahm comes in second place, followed by Rory McIlroy, who made mistakes at the beginning of the game. Tiger Woods was also in the game, coming in at ninth place. He failed to win the tournament, which would have been the 83rd PGA title of his career.
Woods, who was close friends of late Basketball legend, Kobe Bryant, got to hear of the demise of his friend after his round as he admitted he noticed the silence that pervaded the course.
