Min Woo Lee secured his first PGA Tour victory at the Houston Open, holding off challenges from world-class competitors Scottie Scheffler and Gary Woodland. The Australian golfer finished with a score of 20-under 260, breaking the tournament record by four strokes and clinching a one-shot win at Memorial Park Golf Course.
Lee’s victory, coming in his 56th PGA Tour start, came after a final round where he did everything right. After a five-shot lead on the back nine, Lee faced a late surge from Woodland, who tied the course record with a 62, and Scheffler, who birdied four consecutive holes to close the gap. A moment came on the 18th hole when Lee’s 55-foot putt stopped just inches from the cup, leaving him with a straightforward tap-in for par to seal the victory.
This win makes Lee the fifth first-time winner on the tour this season. Beyond the trophy and $1.71 million prize, Lee’s victory guarantees him entry into upcoming signature events and solidifies his position in the FedEx Cup standings, where he now ranks 16th.
Lee’s path to victory included standout performances earlier in the tournament. He shot a career-best 64 on Friday to position himself as a contender and followed it up with an exceptional 63 on Saturday. These rounds helped him build a lead heading into Sunday’s final round, where he managed to maintain focus amidst challenging conditions and mounting pressure from his rivals.
Reflecting on his achievement, Lee acknowledged the mental challenges of competing at this level. He also explained how previous experiences helped him deal with the intense atmosphere of Sunday’s final round: “This is my first time kind of being in front and trying to hold a lead.
“I’m glad I obviously got it done, but man, I’m very exhausted. It was a lot of mental grind, and I’m so proud of how I handled myself.”
This victory adds to Lee’s growing list of accomplishments as a professional golfer. While it may be his first PGA Tour win, it is his fifth global title, with his most recent prior win being at the 2023 Australian PGA Championship. His success at Houston also makes him the first player since Paul Casey in 2009 to win this event in their debut appearance.
