Manchester United interim head coach Ralf Rangnick has stated that the main aim of his team will be to finish in the top four in the Premier League and the German also admitted that this will be the highest possible achievement they can savor in the ongoing season.
Manchester United has thus far played 24 matches out of which they have won 11 matches and they are currently in fifth place in the standings with 40 points under their belt. The Red Devils are 23 points away from table-toppers Manchester City.
Ralf Rangnick’s team has managed only two wins in their last seven matches as they haven’t been able to deliver the goods. Furthermore, Manchester United’s last match against Southampton ended in a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford on Saturday.
Apart from the Premier League, Manchester United will look to go all the way in the Champions League but Rangnick admitted that it is not going to be easy. The Red Devils will face Atletico Madrid in the Round of 16.
“We want to finish fourth in the league, this is the highest possible achievement we can get,” Rangnick told a news conference on Monday. “The Champions League, definitely we want to proceed but it’s not an easy one.
“In the league, it’s No. 4. That’s what we have to achieve and what we’re aiming at. Next season, after being here 11 weeks, I know what it takes for next season but it’s not the time now to discuss this with everyone.”
Meanwhile, Manchester United hasn’t registered a single win in their last three matches. Furthermore, they were knocked out of FA Cup by Middlesbrough as they lost on penalties.
“I think it’s pretty obvious the players are getting ideas across,” he said. “Now it’s about doing it sustainably for the entire game and this is exactly the next step we have to take.
“The first halves have been really good, we didn’t concede a single goal, the next step is to raise our level, stay focused, physically, mentally and tactically. “We gave away those goals too easily, it was just too easy and it was our own mistakes we made to let the other team score.”
Manchester United will next face Brighton at Old Trafford on Tuesday.
