Manchester City head coach Pep Guardiola has urged his team to seize a historic treble after their FA Cup triumph. City defeated derby rivals Manchester United by 2-1 in the FA Cup summit clash at Wembley Stadium, on Saturday.
This win takes them one win away from achieving the treble and match Manchester United’s feat of winning it back in 1999. City will be eyeing to complete the historic treble when they will take on Inter Milan in the UEFA Champions League final.
Meanwhile, Ilkay Gundogan scored a brace for the Sky Blues in the final against Red Devils. The German scored in the first minute of the game, scoring the fastest goal in the FA Cup history. Bruno Fernandes equalized for Erik Ten Hag’s team through a spot kick in the 33rd minute but Gundogan once again put his team in front in the 51st minute.
Meanwhile, Guardiola shed light on the importance of winning the Champions League.
“We are in a position we will probably never be in again,” Guardiola told reporters.
“Everything will not be complete if we don’t win the Champions League now. We have to win the Champions League to be recognised how the team deserves to be recognised.”
The Spaniard revealed he has told his players to focus on UCL final against Inter Milan and deliver their best.
“To win the FA Cup the emotions are really special. Now is the first time I can talk about the trebleâ€æ It is one game away,” said Guardiola added.
“I’m thinking about what we have to do to beat Inter. I spoke with the players many times. Forget about it. Focus on what you need to do to beat Inter.”
Manchester City has been coming up with collective efforts and they will be looking to clinch the final frontier. The UCL final will be played on June 10.
