Wayne Rooney has officially parted ways with Plymouth Argyle, the club confirmed on Tuesday. The announcement follows a difficult run of form for the team, which currently sits at the bottom of the Championship table.
Plymouth has struggled throughout the season, losing six of its last seven league matches. The club’s poor performance brought Rooney’s tenure to an end after just 23 league games in charge.
In an official statement, the club expressed its gratitude to Rooney and his coaching staff for their efforts during his time as head coach. “We would like to thank Wayne and his team for all their efforts and wish them well for the future. The club will be making no further comment at this stage with updates on our new first team management staff in due course.”
For now, first-team coach Kevin Nancekivell and Club Captain Joe Edwards will take charge of the team as interim managers for the New Year’s Day clash against Bristol City. Goalkeeping coach Daryl Flahavan will also remain in his role as part of the temporary setup.
Rooney, reflecting on his departure, shared his appreciation for the club, its leadership, and the fans. “I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Board of Plymouth Argyle Football Club, in particular Simon Hallett and Neil Dewsnip, who I shared great relationships with. Thanks also to all the staff who made me feel welcome and who make the club such a special place, the players and fans for their efforts and support during my time as Head Coach. I wish them all the best for the future,” he said.
In a heartfelt message to the club’s supporters, known as the Green Army, Rooney added: “Thanks for making the games at Home Park so special; they are memories that we will share forever.” He also expressed gratitude to his coaching staff, including Kevin Nancekivell, Simon Ireland, Daryl Flahavan, and Mike Phelan, for their dedication and support.
Despite the challenges of his tenure, Rooney ended on a positive note, affirming that Plymouth Argyle would always hold a special place in his heart.
As the search for a new manager begins, the club will look to rebuild and find a way to climb out of the relegation zone. Fans will be hoping that the Green Army’s spirit can inspire a turnaround in the second half of the season.
